Building an Outdoor Kitchen

As the weather starts to cool down, it’s time once again to spend more time outside. You can extend the length of time you enjoy your outdoor space by creating an outdoor kitchen. With a grill, table refrigerator and anything else you can imagine, this space could be used year round in many cases in our climate.

Determine Your Budget

Your first step is to figure out how much money you have to put towards this project. The larger your budget, the more components you can add but you can also start with a plan that allows you to expand as your budget allows.

Decide on the Must-Haves

If you look at photos of dream outdoor spaces, you may realize you can’t afford it all. However, you can prioritize your must-have list to get the most important items. A grill, mini-fridge and warming area are all usually high on the list of priorities along with a fire pit and seating area.

Look at Durable Materials

For the items that must remain outside all year, choose materials that won’t rust or wear quickly. Purchase covers for everything else, like the grill and seating sets. The same is true for cushions. Choose materials that are washable and will withstand the outdoor elements.

Consider Function

Think about how you want your outdoor space to work before you begin building. Many cooks like a grilling island where everything is connected with cabinets and storage underneath and counterspace on top. You may want to build an overhang to keep the rain off the cook as they do the grilling. If you entertain in the evening, you may want to add solar lights or other lighting to extend the use of this area.

An outdoor oven or fireplace will allow you to do even more cooking outside while providing warmth on cooler evenings. You may find your outdoor space becomes used even more than the rest of the home if you have a design you love.
