The summer heat is definitely here and that likely means your electric bill will be at its peak for the next few cycles. Without resorting to candles and wood stoves to prepare your meals, there are some simple things you can do to decrease your energy use. These tips will allow you to save some money and conserve some of our natural resources as well.
- One of the simplest things you can do to reduce energy usage during the warm weather months is to change the temperature you keep your thermostat set on. No one wants to be hot inside their home but it is likely that you wouldn’t notice a few degrees’ difference. Turn the thermostat up at night when you are in bed or during the day if everyone is away from home. This can be easily accomplished if you have a programmable thermostat that adjusts automatically. You can also manually adjust the thermostat at the appropriate time.
- Ceiling fans can help your home feel cooler and will allow you to raise the thermostat temperature without feeling the difference. Fans don’t provide any cooling benefit when you aren’t in the room they are in so turn them off when you leave the room.
- Make sure you change your air filters according to the manufacturer’s recommendations for your system. This will allow your system to operate at its highest efficiency.
- Avoid placing lamps or anything that creates heat near your thermostat. Your thermostat will detect the heat coming from these devices making your air conditioner run more than necessary.
- You still have to eat but the oven heats up the house more than other appliances. During the summer months, use the crock pot, air fryer or grill to prepare meals as often as you can.
- Pay attention to where the sun is outside when you open the blinds and curtains at home. You can definitely utilize the sun for natural light during the day and early evening but with the blinds open early or late in the day when the sun is rising and setting, but the sun coming directly into your home may heat up your home unnecessarily. Keep the windows covered when the sunlight is coming at them and use the windows on the other sides of your home for light.
All of these energy tips will add together to reduce your electric bill without sacrificing comfort and with little to no effort or time investment on your part.
