When you have pets living in your home, it is almost impossible to not smell them at some point. It’s also really easy to get used to the smell of your home and not notice. If you are trying to sell your home, it’s important to not offend buyers that come to look at your home with odors. Try some of these tips to get ahead of the pet odors before they become harder to eliminate.
- Keep your pets clean. Regular baths by you or a grooming provider will help keep your pet’s smell from getting out of control.
- Keep your carpets clean. Carpets can easily trap all kinds of smells. If you have a dog or a cat, regular vacuuming at least twice a week, is a good way to prevent hair and dander from building up. Periodic steam cleaning of your carpets will help eliminate odors as well. When you take your pets outside, it is a good idea to check their paws before you come back inside in case they are dirty. This will prevent them from tracking excess dirt into your home. If you are updating your floors, consider eliminating carpet in lieu of something that doesn’t trap odors.
- Clean your furniture regularly if you allow your pets on it.
- If your pet has a bed, clean it often. Pet beds are often forgotten when it comes time to clean and if your pet spends much time in it, they can get pretty smelly.
- Wash your pets food and water bowls weekly. Bacteria from their saliva gets left behind and if you have smelled a dog’s breath before, it isn’t always pleasant.
- Store your pet’s food in an air tight container that keeps the smell in. Some foods smell worse than others but almost all of them have a pretty strong smell. Keeping the food contained will decrease the smell.
- Open up your home and let fresh air in. The weather doesn’t always cooperate when it comes time for this but do it as often as you can. Fresh air will help neutralize the odors in your home.
- Wash your pet’s toys. A lovingly chewed tennis ball or bone can be super smelly. Clean them up and your pet will appreciate it too.
It is hard to smell your own home. Ask a friend or neighbor to walk through and perform a sniff test. Remember there is no easy fix to make odors go away but diligent cleaning will help make your home fresh again.
