As everyone prepares for the Spring season, this month offers a great time to take care of a few essential home care tasks. These are important to keep your property safe, but are easily forgotten during busy times. None of them take very long, so put them on your calendar for a weekend.
- Check your thermostat – clean the heat sensor and all contact points, check for accuracy. You may have higher heating costs if the thermostat isn’t working correctly, so have it replaced if it doesn’t maintain an accurate temperature.
- Test smoke detectors – replace batteries if needed. Remember that many hard-wired detectors still use batteries as a backup, so check them even if the unit is wired into your home.
- Find all gas shut-off valves – if you’ve recently moved or you just never took the time before, look for shut-off valves for all gas appliances and furnace in your home. You need to be able to access this quickly if there’s a gas leak. Identify your water cutoff if you don’t know where it is too.
- Clean out the vent duct of the dryer – the second largest cause of house fires is a duct stopped up with dryer lint.
- Clean refrigerator coils – these coils are located at the back of the appliance and aren’t hard to get too if you take the time. This task will help your refrigerator work more efficiently saving you money and extending the life of the appliance.
- Replace furnace filters – in some cases, you may be able to clean your filters. A clean filter ensures your furnace works more efficiently and lasts longer.
- Check fire extinguishers – refill the extinguisher or replace it if it isn’t full. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher, now is the time to go out and buy one. The most important place to have a fire extinguisher is in the kitchen. They can be picked up from home improvement stores.
If you take just a few minutes to do these tasks, you’ll keep your home working more efficiently and ensure it’s a safe place for you and your family.
