Is an Open Floor Plan Right for You?

If you have been looking for a new home, you are likely to see many options with open floor plans. This option started to appear in the 1970s and really exploded in the 1990s and is still popular in many of today’s homes as well. While not all homes are open and many are only open in some parts of the home, it is a very popular feature that you are certain to encounter if you are shopping for a home. While you may think it is impossible to find a home that isn’t open, there are plenty of options today for homes in a variety of styles. Before you purchase an open floor plan, make sure that is the right style for you. Here are five questions to ask yourself as you decide.

1. How many people live in your home? The more people that live in your home, the more likely you are to need some space that can be closed off for privacy. This could be to allow someone to work or kids to play without involving the entire house.

2. How old are the residents in your home? When there are young children in the home, it may be more beneficial to have an open floor plan. Trying to make dinner and keep your eyes on the kids can be hard. If they are closed in another room, it becomes impossible. When the home is open, it is easy to make dinner and keep an eye and an ear on the smallest members of your family.

3. Does someone in your household work from home? An open floor plan doesn’t mean there aren’t any rooms with doors but the living parts of the home are normally connected in some way. If you or someone else in your home work from home full time, you may find it essential to have a dedicated room that is separate from the living space in the house to allow that person to maintain maximum productivity.

4. Is your household made up of multiple families? If your household represents a blended family or another similar situation, you may find separate spaces to gather allow the family to grow together over time without being forced to spend all their time together from day one. Family situations are all different and very special and sometimes a little extra space can make everyone happier.

5. Is your home the hangout of the neighborhood? Whether your neighbors are joining you for dinner every Friday or your home is the first stop when kids get off the bus, if you regularly have guests in your home, you may love the flexibility an open floor plan offers. From supervising homework during dinner prep to keeping an eye on teenagers hanging out, an open plan can mean you don’t have to be in the same room with everyone to know exactly what’s going on.
