Tips for Securing Your Home

As a homeowner, home security is important. Doors, windows and other items at your home need to be secured to protect your property and your family. Home security should always be a priority and almost always should be installed and maintained by professionals. But, if you’re going to upgrade your security, it can help to know a bit about what goes into that security.

  • Locks on your doors are the most basic and important security you can have. Doorknob locks are the most basic type of door security system, and with that comes the inherent problem that they are easy to defeat. On doors leading from the outside, doorknob locks aren’t enough to provide reliable security. They should always be paired with a deadbolt. The Deadbolt lock is a physical safety lock, securing the door in the frame with a metal bolt that slides into a receptacle in the door frame. The bolt itself should be steel and at least an inch long. The strike plate, where the deadbolt locks into place, should be securely set into the door frame with screws that are strong, durable, and at least three inches long. Shorter screws can be easily torn out of the wood.
  • In addition to door locks, all of your windows should have locks on them. While some windows don’t open and won’t have locks, if a window can be opened, it must have a functioning lock to remain secure.
  • After the windows and doors, property lighting is the next step in home security. Add lighting outside your home so you can see when you are outside at night. Motion sensor lighting will also allow you to know when there is activity on your property.
  • To go a step further in home security, consider a monitored alarm system. This can protect your property when you are at home and away by alerting you and the emergency services professionals in case of a break-in, fire or other home emergency.

Securing your home shows you care about your family and will give you extra comfort while you are at home and away.
