Adding Color to Your Home

Many people like color, but they are afraid to use it in their homes. They are concerned about overpowering a room or making a place look tacky. While too much color can be hard to adjust to, adding color in small amounts can add a lot of personality to your home. Here are some tips to help you add color to your home.

Start with Your Favorite Neutral

Before you start adding in color, begin your palette with a neutral shade. It can be browns, tans, white, or gray, but it will set the right background for other tones. Use this neutral on big items like your couch or bed, the walls and the carpet. This gives you a good base to add color to.

Think about Your Desired Atmosphere

Do you want your bedroom to be relaxing, the living room welcoming and the dining room exciting? Think about the mood you want to set in each room, and that tone will help you select the right colors. For instance, red is not usually a good color for the bedroom because it is stimulating. Instead, it’s a popular choice for kitchens and dining rooms because it stimulates the appetite.

Choose a Third Color

You’ll want a third color to balance out the neutral and the bold shade you want to add. This is considered the 60-30-10 rule where 60 percent of your room is going to be the neutral color and 10 percent will be the bold shade. The 30 percent should be a complimentary color that doesn’t overpower the other two.

Use Your Bold Color Strategically

In other words, think carefully about how and where you will use your bold shade. It may be the pillows on your couch or the centerpiece on a dining room table. The brightest or boldest shade is a burst of color that is used in certain areas to create interest and draw your attention.

Remember that when you decorate, your focus should be on the entire room and not just one area or color. When it comes together, the result is a fabulous space that draws people in.
